Day Two: Proceedings of the International Conference
On the second day of the international conference, three thematic sessions and a closing lecture were held, offering diverse perspectives on migration in the Mediterranean. The discussions focused on borders and identity, religion and education, and cultural representations. Contributions were made by scholars based in Morocco, Europe and the United States.
The first session examined how border policies shape migrant identities. The second session addressed the role of education and culture in the migration experience, emphasising educational programmes as a means of integration and fostering resilience. The third session explored competition between migrant communities within host societies, as well as the role of music in preserving memory and reimagining a sense of belonging.
In the evening, Abram de Swaan, a sociologist from the University of Amsterdam, delivered a closing talk on migration dynamics in Europe amid the rise of populist discourse. The day concluded with a documentary screening about African migrants on Europe's doorstep, followed by a Gnawa music performance.
