Death of the Est Andalusian historian Pierre Guichard

 

The French historian Pierre Guichard passed away on April 6th, 2021 at the age of 81. He obtained an aggregation in history in 1964 and enrolled at the Casa Velasquez in Madrid, where he was trained to use written sources and learn the methodologies of archaeology. He was a lecturer at the University of Toulouse and taught medieval history at the University of Lyon II from 1976 to 2004. Also, he oversaw the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED) in the 90’s.

Pierre Guichard was known for his interest in Maghrebi studies and his strong relations with the Maghrebian academic circles.  In 1996, researchers and students were pleased to meet him at the Foundation on the occasion of the symposium « Andalusian heritage: a rebirth of the mind » that took place on November 8th, 1996. He gave a lecture entitled « the Andalusian society: myth and reality » that showed the extent of his knowledge of the various sources of the written Andalusian history and the archaeological archives. The proceedings of this symposium were published in the « Arab world in scientific research» journal volume 9, 1998.

Pierre Guichard carried out tens of researches and studies notably, his dissertation on « Oriental and Western social structures in Muslim Spain » in (1977), his compositional book on « The history of Andalusia, 711-1492 » and the collective one written with Jean-Claude Garsin and Thierry Bianquis, « Etats, sociétés et cultures du monde musulman médiéval » [ Countries, societies and culture in the medieval Muslim world] published in three volumes (1995-2000).
